About Gabriele
Gabriele Romeo is an Italian jazz guitarist, composer, arranger and educator based in Berlin. His playing is rooted in classic jazz, bebop and modern repertoire, with a wider musical background that also embraces ambient and electronic music. His current trio/quartet project brings together original compositions, personal arrangements and jazz standards.
Gabriele began playing guitar in his teenage years, studying in Italy with Germano Seggio before attending the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, where he graduated in 2012. His years in London included work with ensembles spanning Afrobeat, rock, electronic and contemporary music—experiences that continue to inform his approach to improvisation and composition.
Based in Berlin since 2014, he has worked across live performance, composition and music production. His electronic work under the name Mentha includes the 2018 album Chromatic Narrations, bringing together ambient, dubstep, jazz and progressive influences, alongside his work with Subaltern Records. His performing history includes the voice-and-guitar collaboration with Olla, touring with the Italian band Jakkle in 2023, and a solo-guitar residency at the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin.
Teaching is another central part of his work. Alongside performing, Gabriele develops jazz-guitar courses and teaching resources, helping players turn harmony, comping, swing feel and improvisation into practical musical skills. His approach connects the study of jazz with the experience of playing songs, developing arrangements and making music with other musicians.
